Value of Tourism

Tourism is the Backbone of Our Economy

The travel and tourism industry remains one of the United States’ largest economic sectors, generating approximately $2.9 trillion in total economic output in 2025.

Closer to home, tourism remains one of Florida’s largest economic drivers, with 143.3 million visitors traveling to the Sunshine State in 2025. During their stay, these visitors generated significant economic impact, with the most recent data showing $134.9 billion in visitor spending. That spending produced $33.6 billion in state and local tax revenue, helping fund essential services such as education, transportation and cultural institutions, while supporting continued investment in experiences that keep Florida competitive as a top travel destination.

Here in Lee County, tourism continues to be a powerful economic engine, supporting more than 31,000 jobs. In 2025, we welcomed 3.32 million visitors who generated more than $3.3 billion in direct spending while in our destination. That visitor spending also helps reduce the tax burden on residents, saving the average Lee County household an estimated $929 annually.

Not only do we benefit from tourism’s economic impact in dollars and cents, but we also benefit from the quality of life it helps sustain. In essence, tourism is a tool for enhancing what we love most about our region, from its ecological wonders to its rich history and vibrant culture.
